October 2015 - The Women’s Giving Circle of Marinette & Menominee Counties awarded almost $5,000 in grants to local non-profit organizations and named Sarah Cherney Hanson recipient of its Queen Marinette Award.
Awards were announced at the WGC annual gathering and awards ceremony on Sept. 24 at Little River County Club.
Hanson, executive director of the Healthy Youth Coalition, is the second recipient of the award. She was introduced by last year’s recipient, Michell Hampton of the Greater M&M YMCA, by videotape.
The award is named for Marie Antoinette Chevalier Farnsworth, grand-daughter of a Menominee tribal chief, who ran a trading post on the banks of the Menominee River and owned substantial property in downtown Marinette. She is known for her community spirit, wisdom and compassion.
Hanson was among more than a dozen nominees for the honor. Her name was submitted by Mary Falkenberg, who wrote of Hanson, “I, as a member of the community, cannot thank Sarah Hanson enough for all the hours of work, the time, all her talents and especially the love she has given the Healthy Youth Coalition.”
Grants were awarded to Abundant Life Mission, $500 for an organic gardening project for girls, and $1,088 for women’s lockers; Greater M&M YMCA, $600 for a program for middle-school girls; and $750 to the Marinette Recreation Department, for its summer playground program.
Also receiving grants were the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Educational Foundation, $1,000 for scholarships, and Rainbow House Domestic Abuse Service, $1,050 for transportation and communications needs of women experiencing domestic violence.
The WGC also voted on a slate of officers for the 2015-16 year. They are Robin Kinzer West, chairperson; Terri Falkenberg, co-chair; Fran Seefeldt, secretary; and Joann Klumb, treasurer.
The Women’s Giving Circle, an endowed field of interest fund within the M&M Area Community Foundation, began in 2008 with a donation from an anonymous female donor who continues to fund the effort, which is augmented by contributions from other area women.
